Our Pediatric Dental Services

It is our goal to make your dental experience as pleasant and stress free as possible, while maintaining the highest level of service and dental technology available. We pride ourselves on providing a comprehensive array of offerings from routine cleanings to aesthetic restoration. Select a service below to learn more about what we do.

We feel that the only way for your child to have strong, durable and aesthetically pleasing teeth is for gums and bones to be maintained in excellent health. If you need to schedule your child’s next dental check-up, give us a call at (919) 806-0200 or click here to schedule an appointment.

Preventive Care

Prevention should always be your goal. Please have your child brush twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush (manual or electric) with the ADA approved seal. Children 0 – 3 years of age should use toothpaste the size of a grain of rice (a smear) and children ages 3 and older should use a pea-sized amount. We also recommend flossing at least once a day to remove plaque that forms between teeth and along the gum line.

After brushing, have your child rinse with warm water or occasionally mouthwash, if your child is able to properly swish and spit out the mouthwash. Be careful not to allow your child to use or consume too much fluoride, as over consumption could damage developing teeth.

Routine Cleanings

Regular dental exams are a critical component of your child’s overall success and should be scheduled twice a year. During a dental exam, our caring staff will clean your child’s teeth and evaluate your child’s risk of tooth decay. If deemed necessary, we’ll apply a sealant or fluoride to better protect your child’s teeth and reduce the risk of decay.  X-rays or other diagnostic procedures may also be necessary to properly assess your child’s dental needs.

Our dental exams are also an educational opportunity, as we’ll also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques and discuss your child’s diet and oral hygiene habits.

We recommend scheduling your child for a complete dental exam, a professional cleaning, and a topical fluoride application around age 2. We have a thorough and gentle process for easing an anxiety your child may have and helping him or her feel empowered about their dental health.

Schedule your child’s next cleaning.

Infant’s First Visit

teething guide for parents

Protect your child’s teeth by starting dental care early. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and The American Dental Association, your child should visit a dentist within six months after the first tooth appears and no later than your child’s first birthday.

Why so early? Caring for baby teeth are just as important as caring for permanent, adult teeth, as primary teeth help with learning how to chew and speak. They also are important space holders for permanent teeth.

We are experts at providing infant and toddler care. We will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums and we’ll show you how to properly clean them in between visits. We’ll also discuss dietary needs and other oral and lifestyle habits.

Dental Restorations

We offer a comprehensive array of restorative dental services, including fillings, crowns, dental implants and more. We are dedicated to partnering with you to make sure your child’s mouth stays as healthy as possible. Our restorative services are primarily concerned with keeping the mouth functional while maintaining the overall look of your child’s beautiful smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry

While the purpose of restorative dentistry is primarily concerned with keeping mouths healthy, free of pain, and functioning properly, cosmetic dentistry is more focused on the aesthetics of your child’s smile. We will always put the dental health of your child first; however, certain cosmetic procedures may greatly improve how your child’s smile looks and may also improve his or her self-esteem.

Some cosmetic services include teeth whitening, bonding (fixing small chips and minor discoloration), veneers, contouring (reshaping a tooth) and more.

Schedule a consult or session today.

Conscious Sedations

We know that going to the dentist can be an intimidating experience for some children. That’s why we offer several sedation dentistry options depending on your child’s needs treatment plan. Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas,” is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and then inhaled through a small mask that fits over your child’s nose to help him or her relax.

During sedation, your child will  not become unconscious, but they will be drowsy and may even fall asleep. The use of nitrous oxide is only used when necessary and quickly wears off after treatment.

X-Rays

dental x-rays for kids

Dental x-rays are an important tool to monitor how your child’s teeth are developing and help our dental care team look for signs of decay and other diseases. X-rays allow us to detect that which cannot be seen by the naked eye, including cavities, cysts, tumors, and impacted and not fully grown-in teeth. We use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our x-ray procedures keep your child safe and provide the best possible images to inform treatment recommendations. Also, your child will be given a lead apron to wear during the x-ray to provide additional protection.

Fillings & Sealants

dentist twice per year

Sometimes brushing, flossing and rinsing isn’t completely effective in remove food and plaque from your child’s mouth and teeth. There are times when food can get trapped in the pits and grooves on his or her teeth, especially on the back teeth. If not removed in a timely fashion, cavities can form and will be need to be corrected with a filling.

We will talk with you about which filling option is best. Composite fillings are considered more attractive as they match the tooth color and they also remove less of the tooth structure.

We may also apply sealants to your child’s teeth as a fast, easy and effective way to provide extra protection to your child’s teeth. Once applied, sealants act as barriers to cavity-prone areas. They are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth and deep pits and grooves.

Mouth Guards

mouth guards youth sports

Mouth guards are essential pieces of equipment for any child actively participating in sporting activities. The proper use of mouth guards protect your child’s mouth from traumatic injury and also help minimize the risk of traumatic brain injury, which is especially important for younger children.  In addition, mouth guards can be used to prevent tooth damage in children who grind their teeth at night.
